Bhubaneswar : NS India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that a cyclonic storm is very likely to hit the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Saturday morning.

The agency noted that a low pressure is persisting over the south Thailand And in its neighborhood at 8.30 am, which is very likely to emerge over the Andaman Sea in the next 12 hours.

Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts around Saturday morning.

Thereafter, it will move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal by December 2 and become a cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal during subsequent 24 hours. The storm is likely to intensify. A statement from the IMD said.

Elaborating on the movement of the system in Odisha and its impact, IMD’s DG Mrityunjay Mohapatra said, “Though it will be near Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of December 4, it will not make landfall immediately. The system will gradually move in a north-northeast direction.”

He said that a clear picture of rain activity, wind speed and landslides would be available only after the loper (low pressure area) changes into pressure.

The DG said that the IMD has issued a warning for Friday-Sunday and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea after Thursday.

He said that wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely over Odisha coast from Friday and the speed will increase gradually. During cyclonic storm, it is very likely to remain in the range of 60-90 kmph.
