The Nio ET7 achieved a drag coefficient of 0.208; Second best after Mercedes-Benz EQS

Aerodynamic efficiency is important for EVs as it affects not only performance but range as well.

Chinese EV major Nio has revealed that its upcoming ET7 sedan will have a drag coefficient of 0.208 which is the second best figure for an EV after the EQS 450+ which has a drag coefficient of 0.200. The EQS 580 4Matic has a drag coefficient of 0.209 and the Lucid Air has a drag coefficient of 0.21. The Nio had originally expected a drag coefficient of 0.23, but after 800 CFD simulation cases and 120 hours of wind tunnel testing, it further improved it.

“NIO’s aerodynamics team has been deeply engaged in the design and engineering of the ET7 since its inception. Ergonomics and cabin comfort have not been compromised, the ET7’s front windshield tilt angle, radii and angle between headlights and front fenders, fastback The design and ducktail spoiler, C pillar character lines, approach and departure angles, and wheels have been optimized to make the model more aerodynamic,” the Chinese automaker revealed.

“Meanwhile, the watchtower sensor layout on the roof, on the one hand, enables a more commanding view of ultralong-range high-resolution LiDAR and 8-megapixel high-resolution cameras, and redefines exterior design in autonomous driving. Era, however, on the other hand, also poses a major challenge to the vehicle’s air efficiency. The aerodynamics team has spared no effort to perfect the tilt and radius of the LiDAR and cameras, and to improve its aerodynamic performance. , Active Grill Shutter (AGS) and air suspension that come standard on the ET7, and lightweight underbody coverage further boost the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance, creating a perfect combination of aesthetics and aerodynamics,” Nio said.

Aerodynamic efficiency is important for EVs as it affects not only performance but range as well. Nio claims that the 150 kWh battery option of the ET7, which will launch in late 2022, will enable the car to achieve a massive 1,000 km range as per NEDC. NEDC metrics are lower than EPA in the US. More recently, it rated the Lucid Air as the best range of any EV tested in the US of 837 km and is likely to retain that lead over the NIO.
