The patient has cardiac arrest? CPR to the rescue

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is an unexpected loss of heart function caused by an electrical malfunction that prevents the heart from pumping blood throughout the body. There are many symptoms and causes of SCA.

A veteran cardiologist and electrophysiologist from Eternal Hospital, Jaipur spoke to The Indian Express about SCA and said that it can lead to sudden death of the patient if not intervened within the first 6 minutes. He further explained that the human heart beats at 60-100 beats per minute and deviations from this range, which are classified by bradycardia (low heart rate) and tachycardia (high heart rate), are known as cardiac arrhythmias, Which simply means irregular heartbeat. ,

He further explained that the various symptoms of SCA include weakness, palpitations, collapse, pulse loss, shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, chest discomfort and shortness of breath.

He has suggested several preventive measures regarding heart diseases and their effects:

sleep well

It is important to get enough sleep every night (about 7-8 hours). When a person sleeps, the cells of the body rebuild and heal. There have been innumerable studies that suggest that not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure and therefore heart disease.

have a balanced diet

It is essential for us to always have a balanced and healthy diet to maintain our heart health. Green vegetables, fruits, mineral-rich foods, omega-3 fatty acids and low-fat dairy products are recommended.

exercise and mobility

30-40 minutes of exercise daily can help you stay flexible and fight laziness. Walking, running, swimming or going to the gym is great for increasing blood circulation.

cholesterol test

High cholesterol causes heart disease and heart attacks. To prevent such conditions it is important for us to avoid those foods which increase the level of bad cholesterol in the body and decrease the level of good cholesterol.

regular check-up

To ensure that your heart remains healthy and any problems can be dealt with as soon as possible, it is recommended to have a heart check-up at an interval of 6 months (twice a year).

While these were preventive measures in relation to cardiovascular problems and heart attacks, what does one do if a person is experiencing SCA? According to Dr. Makkar, the correct answer is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

He said – “It is a first aid procedure to revive a person who has had an episode of SCA. It is an emergency life saving procedure which is performed when the heart stops beating, which can lead to heart attack, stroke, electrocution, It could also be due to drowning etc.
