Nagpur: In connection with the disappearance of heavy machinery worth several crores from the Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited (MAPL) plant in Nagpur, the supervisor and guard of the security agency have reportedly said that the apathy of Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL), Pune, One reason for the theft was about the security of the plant. The MIDC police had closed the complaint lodged by its union leader Suresh Gotmare.
On June 13, TOI had reported the mysterious disappearance of machinery from the plant and HAL, which is the parent company of MAPL, had not filed any complaint. The plant was closed in 2003 and the machinery was intact until 2015. They disappeared after the company’s revival was announced in 2015.
Bombay Security Services, affiliated to MAPL, filed a complaint of theft of machinery worth Rs 26,000 with the MIDC police on April 14, 2016.
Following several reports by TOI, HAL lodged a complaint of theft of machinery and equipment worth Rs 75,74,100 with the MIDC police on July 26. Police have registered a case against unknown thieves, supervisor and security agency guards.
On behalf of the MIDC police, the police said that the statements of the supervisors and guards of the security agency have been recorded. “He says that he informed HAL officials several times about the theft of machinery from the plant since 2016. He also said that HAL engaged 15 guards in 2002 but reduced it to three in 2015. A part of the wall was demolished. From where the thieves used to enter. It was not repaired by HAL. He also pointed out that the tall grass and bushes made it difficult to get around to security. Even, Electricity supply was not available,” said the police.
He said that the visits of the junk vendors are going on and further investigation is going on.
Even after 51 days of HAL’s complaint, the police has not made any progress. “We have registered a case against the supervisor and guard of the security agency, but they can be arrested only after getting the evidence,” he said.
Gotmare told TOI that strict action should be taken against HAL officials. “It was the only government-run drug manufacturing unit in Vidarbha and it would have helped a lot in the ongoing pandemic,” he said.
