Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha MP Arpita Ghosh resigns

Trinamool Congress MP Arpita Ghosh has resigned from the Rajya Sabha and her resignation has been accepted by Chairman Venkaiah Naidu from October 15.

Ms Ghosh had won the seat from West Bengal in April 2020 and had a five-year term remaining. Prior to this, she was a Lok Sabha member from the Balurghat constituency of West Bengal. She is a theater artist who works as both a director and an actor.

The TMC was not forthcoming on the reasons for his resignation, though sources said he acted as per the wishes of the party.

A senior TMC functionary said, “One has to vacate the space to accommodate others.”

Sources said that he will be given compensation from the party post. His resignation has fueled speculation as to who will replace him. Several contenders are in the queue including former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, who recently joined TMC. The party has 12 members in the Upper House. A Congress rebel who recently joined TMC has been nominated for the 13th seat.

Ms Ghosh, who remains at the frontline of protests in the Rajya Sabha, was recently suspended from the House along with three of her colleagues. Ms Ghosh and others continued their protest outside the House.

At the end of the day, when they returned to collect their bags, Ms Ghosh reportedly got into a scuffle with the security staff. He broke a glass pane. Parliamentary security officials filed a complaint claiming that a woman officer suffered a neck injury after being hit by glass shards.
