Mysuru: In a little over three weeks, the Heritage City will have its main streets lit with lights, avenues painted in bright colours, and the Mysore Palace in the center, illuminated, and lit up in all its glory.
More importantly, as the date of Nada Habba gets closer, so will the eyes of the people who will be all eyes on the finale. The forest dwellers, aware of the need to ensure that the elephants are fully prepared for Jambu Savari, are busy transporting the second batch of elephants – five of them – from Dubare and Bandipur. Mysore, These jumbo will take a walk in the city on 7th September.
Of the five jumbos that will be visiting the city, four will come from the Srirampura elephant camp in Bandipur Tiger Reserve – Sri Ram Gopi, Vijaya and Parthasarathy, for the last of whom, this year’s Dussehra will mark their debut. Meanwhile, the forest department is busy making arrangements to accommodate the elephants, kavadis, mahouts and their families at the Mysore Palace. The Dussehra Empowered Committee had decided to have 14 elephants for this year’s festivities, and the first batch of jumbo – nine in number, including the Howa elephant Abhimanyu Coming in August, he is practicing Jambu Savari.
The forest dwellers overseeing the preparations for Jambu Savari were delighted and relieved when Abhimanyu successfully completed the five kilometer journey from Mysore Palace to Bannimantap for the third time with a sandbag on his back weighing 1,050 kg. This has assured the forest dwellers of Abhimanyu’s ability to carry 750 kg of Ambari, within which an idol of Goddess Chamundeswari for Jambu Savari will be placed. Besides Abhimanyu, the forest dwellers are also training his potential successor, Dhananjay, to rehearse the journey and tie sand bags on his back. Meanwhile, Bhima and Mahendra are practicing with a much lesser weight of 500kg.
V Karikalan, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), told TOI, “We will start training Abhimanyu with a wooden hoe from Monday. We are also making all necessary arrangements to train the elephants for cannon-firing exercises. We will start training the second batch of elephants soon after they reach Mysore on 7th September.”
