The White House deleted the tweet after the intervention of Twitter users

The original tweet referred to the record increase in Social Security benefits under President Joe Biden.

Washington:

The White House said on Wednesday that it removed a tweet after Twitter users flagged the post as contextless.

In its tweet, the White House said it was “thanks to President Biden’s leadership” that US pensioners had received the biggest benefit increase in 10 years.

But a Twitter note created by users argued that the boost was actually due to an automatic adjustment triggered by high inflation – a mechanism that has existed since 1972.

The note was part of Twitter’s Birdwatch program, which adds comments to relevant posts if enough people with broad opinions find them “helpful.”

When asked about the deleted tweet, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said: “The tweet was not complete.” “That was not the context.”

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who took ownership of Twitter last week, lauded the improvement, saying the feature that made it was “awesome.”

“Our goal is to make Twitter the most accurate source of information on Earth, regardless of political affiliation,” Musk tweeted.

American conservatives complain of censorship on major social networks and Musk strongly defends the loose moderation of content on Twitter in the name of free speech.

But critics and government regulators defend the content rules as a key to limiting harassment, hate speech and misinformation.
