Rejecting any major threat from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), newly-elected Himachal Pradesh Congress president Pratibha Singh on Wednesday said there will be a direct contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the year-end elections.
Pratibha Singh, 63, wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, was elected as the new state unit chief Congress President Sonia Gandhi just eight months before the assembly elections in the state.
In an exclusive interview with News18.com after taking charge, Singh dismissed the AAP’s growing challenge.
“Though AAP feels that it is making inroads in Himachal, it will not have any impact on the elections. our straight fight with bjp,” He said.

Ruling out the possibility of major discord within the state unit, Singh said she would try to take all party leaders along to defeat the ruling party.
Singh admitted that he had little time, but was confident that he would soon devise a strategy.
“There is very little time left and the Congress has to do its work together and reach out to the voters. I will soon sit with all senior party leaders and strategize how to counter the BJP on the promises made to the people before coming to power,” Singh said.

Singh said that when BJP came to powerPrime Minister Narendra Modi had promised employment to the youth, healthcare for children and a cut in inflation.
“But now look at everything, prices are high, no development work is visible and the state is at the top of unemployment,” Singh said.
He said that the people of Himachal have seen the work done during the time of Virbhadra Singh.

It is a challenge to carry forward the legacy of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, but people have seen his work. I am aware of the aspirations of the people and we will collectively ensure that Congress comes back to power in Himachal.
When asked whether the Congress would go to the polls with the chief ministerial face, Singh replied in the negative. “Our first motive is to win the election. Once this target is achieved, the elected MLAs will decide their leader.
