People’s spending on mobile apps again hit a new high in 2021, according to store intelligence data from research firm Sensor Tower. The data shows that the top-100 non-game subscription-based apps reported a year-on-year growth in their revenue from $13 billion (approximately Rs 97,572 crore) to $18.3 billion (approximately Rs 1,37,300 crore) worldwide . The top 100 grossing apps generated nearly 14 percent of the $131.6 billion spent on in-app purchases in both non-game apps and mobile games last year. It is about 11.7 percent more in 2020, said the Sensor Tower report.

The research firm said that in Q4 2021, 86 of the top 100 earning apps worldwide offered subscriptions. This was down from 87 per cent in Q4 2020 and 89 per cent in Q4 2019. The report also noted that top subscription apps saw more than double spend on the App Store and Google Play Store. The top 100 non-game apps with subscription model generated $13.5 billion (about Rs 1,01,300 crore) in 2021 – up 31 percent year-on-year compared to 2020.
