‘They will be exposed’: Kharge emails complaint against Adani Group to ED

Opposition parties in India on Wednesday intensified their protest against the Adani Group and stressed their demand for a Joint Probe Committee (JPC). The proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the third consecutive day. BJP ministers are at loggerheads over demands for an apology from Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in Britain. On the other hand, opposition parties moved to the Enforcement Directorate to file a complaint against the Adani group alleging stock manipulation in its report by American short seller Hindenburg.

The march of the opposition parties was stopped by the Delhi Police at Vijay Chowk and it erupted. unable to submit a complaint, the Leader of the Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Sent a complaint letter to the Enforcement Directorate.

In this letter to the ED, the opposition parties have demanded a probe into the matter citing its “serious implications” for not only India’s economy but most importantly democracy.

Kharge, who led the march, said the police did not allow him to go to the ED office as the government did not want him to demand a probe into the Adani case. Opposition leaders met earlier at Kharge’s office to coordinate their strategy on the issue

“… we will go back to Parliament… raise this issue again… and our delegation of 17-18 parties will meet the ED.” Hindustan Times Syed Naseer Hussain of the Congress said, “We will go one by one… and register our complaints.”

“If the ED doesn’t file a complaint, they will be exposed. Then we will issue that complaint to you and create ruckus in Parliament.”

Opposition’s complaint letter to ED

The opposition drafted a two-page letter urging the ED to “probe a relationship that has serious implications not only for our economy but most importantly, our democracy”.

The letter also claimed that the group ‘repeatedly uses undue influence to obtain concessions and contracts from governments and regulated entities’.

The opposition claims a tender for the redevelopment of Mumbai’s Dharavi area, which it said was initially won by a Dubai-based company. 7,200 crore and then canceled ‘due to delay in transfer of railway land’. The revised tender, the opposition said, was won by the Adani group – ‘which has no known experience in urban redevelopment’ – for an amount 2,000 crore less.
