Things to keep in mind when your pet has multiple seizures

Just like humans, their pets also suffer from a variety of diseases and ailments that can take a toll on their health. One such condition or disorder is epilepsy, where your pet experiences frequent seizures. It is one of the most common neurological conditions seen in pets, usually dogs.

During epilepsy, your pet is likely to experience clumsiness, falling, loss of consciousness, drooling or kissing, among others. When it comes to dogs who suffer from epilepsy, they tend to fall on their sides and do the paddling motion with their feet.

Apart from this, popping, urinating, tongue chewing and foaming in the mouth are also some common symptoms of epilepsy.

Seizures in dogs can be caused by many reasons such as any liver disease, anemia, head injury, stroke, low or high blood sugar, and eating poison, among others.

Now, although experts claim that seizures are not painful for your pet, they still feel quite confused and nervous. Therefore, it becomes imperative that you consume a few things if your pet experiences epilepsy. You can consider some of the suggestions mentioned below:

  • Doctors recommend that if your pet experiences seizures lasting more than a few minutes, his body may be overheated. In this case, it is advisable that you quickly turn on the fan and blow cool air over it. However, if seizures go on for too long, take your pet to the vet immediately.
  • According to some studies, your pet’s diet is believed to play an important role in controlling his epilepsy. In many cases, dogs have been put on a special diet that is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and has also been shown to be effective in treating seizures in dogs.
  • However, it should be noted that if your pet is already on medication, it is not advisable to change their diet without consulting a vet. Sudden changes in diet while your pet is being treated can affect the effectiveness of anti-epileptic drugs.
  • When your pet has a seizure, he may collapse and move uncontrollably. It is important that you stay calm and be sure to remove things like furniture with sharp edges that could injure your pet.
  • After a seizure, your pet is likely to be confused, so try to speak to him softly and reassure him with a gentle touch. Also, avoid touching his mouth or putting anything inside it, as you could be bitten.
