Becoming a civil servant is a cherished dream for many aspirants. Every year, thousands of UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) candidates vie for a limited number of positions in IAS and IPS, making the civil services examination one of the toughest in the world. While success in these exams is a remarkable achievement, there are instances where officers decide to chart a different course in their careers. One such example is Rajan Singh, a former IPS officer who chose to leave the service after serving for eight years to pursue an alternative path.

Rajan Singh, a former IPS officer from the 1997 batch in Kerala, embarked on an unconventional journey. His initial academic background was in engineering, and he earned his degree from Kanpur IIT in 1955. Subsequently, he set his sights on the UPSC examination, where he successfully cleared the rigorous selection process, earning him a coveted position as an IPS officer. Originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Singh’s career trajectory saw him appointed as the police commissioner of Thiruvananthapuram within just six months of joining the service. His wife, Tinku Biswal, is an IAS officer belonging to the Kerala Cadre.

Despite a promising career in the police service, Rajan Singh made a life-altering decision in 2005. After dedicating eight years to his role as an IPS officer, he chose to step away from the service to pursue higher education. Singh enrolled in the Wharton School in US, where he pursued a business degree. Following the completion of his studies, he joined the renowned global management firm McKinsey and Company in New York, where he worked for two years.

In 2012, Rajan Singh ventured into the field of education by founding Course Brew, an innovative online learning platform that specializes in interactive video-based learning. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to flourish, leading him to establish Concept Owl in 2015. Concept Owl focuses on developing science and math learning programs designed to benefit students from smaller towns.

Amid the challenging backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Rajan Singh’s entrepreneurial journey reached another milestone with the creation of Habit Strong, a habit-based learning platform. Subsequently, Habit Strong merged with Concept Owl, setting the stage for even greater success in the future.
