Amritpal, who heads an organization called ‘Waris Punjab Day’, and his supporters brought a vehicle carrying a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib to the police station to conduct “Amrit Sanchar” (a Sikh ceremony).

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said those who took the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib to the police station as a shield cannot be called the ‘heirs’ of Punjab.

His comments came days after self-styled Sikh preacher and Khalistani sympathizer Amritpal Singh and his supporters, brandishing swords and guns, stormed a police station at Ajnala on the outskirts of Amritsar city on Thursday. It was assured by the police that his associate and accused in the kidnapping case, Lovepreet Singh, would be released.

Amritpal, who heads an organization called ‘Waris Punjab Day’, and his supporters brought a vehicle carrying a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib to organize “Amrit Sanchar” (a Sikh ceremony) at the police station.

In a tweet in Punjabi, Mann said, “Those who carry Guru Granth Sahib to police stations as shields can in no way be called ‘heirs’ of Punjab and Punjabiyat.”

The Punjab Police had said on Friday that the protesters used the holy Guru Granth Sahib as a shield and attacked police personnel in a cowardly manner, injuring six people.

Lovepreet Singh came out of jail on Friday.
