An official said the fire broke out in a ward on the third floor of the hospital, which houses the ICU.

“We could not save three children who were already seriously ill which is very painful. The rescue operation was swift and the fire has been brought under control, but unfortunately the lives of three children could not be saved,” Mr Chouhan tweeted.

“A high level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. The inquiry will be conducted by Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Health and Medical Education, Mohammad Suleman,” he said in another tweet.

Fatehgarh fire brigade station in-charge Zubeer Khan said that the fire broke out at around 9 pm and eight to ten fire tenders reached the spot to extinguish the fire.

Khan said a short-circuit could have caused the fire.
