#THtalksBengaluru: More traffic lights to be installed in newly added areas

The police also announced that four new traffic police stations would be set up in Bengaluru at Hennur, Thalagattapura, Bellandur and Mahadevapura.

Traffic management in an ever-growing city has become quite a challenge for the traffic police. With more and more rural areas being added to the BBMP limits, the demand for better traffic regulation, traffic lights and signage from such areas has also increased. Dr. MA Saleem, Special Commissioner (Traffic), Bengaluru assured during a live chat on 24th December that such areas would be the point of focus in the near future.

“We are going to install some more traffic signals, especially in the outskirts. For example, on Sarjapur Road, we want to install two more traffic lights at junctions. Similarly in areas like Bagalagunte, Magadi Road, Mysore Road and Kumbhalgodu, In the south areas beyond JP Nagar, like Sarakki, traffic has increased to a great extent and we will focus on them,” he explained.

The BTP recently announced that four new traffic police stations would be set up at Hennur, Thalagattapura, Bellandur and Mahadevapura.

Entry and exit points for residential layout

If all the residents of a particular locality agree, they can coordinate with the civic body of the city, and keep only one or two entry and exit points to the area and close the rest, Mr Saleem said .

“There are several complaints about the residential layout being carried by traffic during the day. In many cases, cab drivers and school bus drivers park their vehicles in residential streets, causing a lot of frustration. So, that’s one of the ways that we can try to address that. We can limit the entry and exit points to one or two in a residential layout, which will prevent others from entering the locality. But all the residents of the area should agree to it,” he said.

However, he also said that the RWAs needed to take a unanimous decision and coordinate with the civic body to get it done and the traffic police would have no objection.

bus stop to be shifted

From the infamous Silk Board Junction to many other places in the city, BMTC buses stoppage has proved to be a problem for commuters. Many readers of Hindu, Responding to their queries, Mr. Salim said that steps are being taken to shift such bus stops 100 meters before or after the junction.

“Bus stops are a major issue wherever they are located near junctions. Along with relocating them, we are also actively sending people to the designated new bus stops as buses usually stop where people come and stand. This will help in decongesting the junctions.”

He also said that once the Namma Metro work is completed, the previous bus priority lane from Silk Board to Hebbal would reopen, and the complementary metro from the bus priority lane would provide a much-needed boost to public transport.
