Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait was detained at the Ghazipur border on Sunday when he was entering the capital to participate in an unemployment protest at Jantar Mantar, a police aid.

“He was stopped at Ghazipur border in the afternoon after which he was taken to Madhu Vihar police station. The police asked him to go back, to which he agreed and he was taken back,” said a senior officer.

‘unfair assembly’

Sources said Mr Tikait was prevented from entering the capital to prevent any law and order situation due to “unfair gathering” in the city.

“The Delhi Police which is working at the behest of the government cannot suppress the voice of the farmers. Arrest will bring a new revolution. This struggle will continue till the last breath. Will not stop, will not get tired, will not bow down,” Mr. Tikait tweeted in Hindi.

DCP (External) Sameer Sharma said that in view of the mahapanchayat (protest of unemployment) at Jantar Mantar by the United Kisan Morcha and other farmer groups, the outer district has made several arrangements. The DCP said, “According to sources, SKM and other farmer groups are going to organize a mahapanchayat at Jantar Mantar on August 22 and they will pass through the jurisdiction of the outer district.

He said that to avoid any untoward incident, adequate deployment of local police and outside force would be made in the outlying district area i.e. Tikri border, major intersections, railway tracks and metro stations.
