He said the Mamata Banerjee-led party would not help the opposition but the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by not participating in the vice-presidential election.

Opposition vice-president Margaret Alva on Saturday said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) still has time to reconsider its decision not to participate in the August 6 polls. He said the Mamata Banerjee-led party would not help the opposition but the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by not participating in the vice-presidential election.

“TMC is an important member of the opposition bloc. Being ‘neutral’ in the crucial election of the Vice President of India does not help the opposition. It only helps the ruling party,” Alva wrote on Twitter. “It is time to reconsider this decision and allow TMC MPs to vote according to their conscience,” the former governor said.

The election for the post of Vice-President will be held on August 6 and the results will be out on the same day. All MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, join the electoral college in the election of the Vice-President.
