Tipra Motha chief quits politics, public life, says ‘have decided to give….’

Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA Motha) chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma on Tuesday announced that he has decided to quit politics and public life. In a video message published by Deb Barma, the royal scion is heard saying ‘I have decided to give something to people and quit politics and public life’.

“I don’t want to do politics anymore, I want to give something to the people. I have decided to give something to people and quit politics and public life…”, said Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, Tipra Motha chief.

In the minute long video, Deb Barma also says ‘MP banne se kuch nahin milega’ (Will get nothing out of becoming an MP). Aapne logon k liye kuch karunga (Will do something for my people)’

The move comes two days after the TIPRA Motha chief along with party leaders met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday and urged him to bring a “Constitutional solution” to its demand for “Greater Tipraland”.

“We met with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on a core demand for greater Tipraland, constitutional solution for the greater Tipraland. We met him along with other leaders, and we had a discussion,” said the TIPRA Motha Party chief.

Barman had said that his party want the indigenous people of Tripura to have a life of dignity.

“We stuck to our point that we want the indigenous people of Tripura to have a life of dignity–a life where they can have rights over their own land and rights for the next generation. So we spoke on those issues, and we have been very clear that we are not interested in anything else,” he added.

Deb Barma had further said that the Union Home Minister has assured him that the central government would soon start the process of discussions on the demands.

The TIPRA Motha was formed in 2021 over the demand for a separate Greater Tipraland state for tribals of the state. Notably, the party’s core demand, however, underwent a series of changes in the interim, and before the Assembly elections earlier this year, it had already begun claiming that the Greater Tipraland it envisaged, would be an autonomous territory within the state of Tripura as per the Constitution of India, albeit with a host of features like direct funding from the Centre, to empower tribal development.
