Collector M. Pradeep Kumar on Monday said that Tiruchi is among the top five districts in the state with high accident rate.

The Collector said that 634 accidents took place in Tiruchy district last year due to various reasons including drunken driving, using cell phones and line crossing.

Speaking at a traffic awareness program for school students, the collector said that nearly 80% of the accidents happen to two-wheelers and most of the deaths are due to non-wearing of helmets. Earlier, he inaugurated the Children Traffic Park at the old collectorate here.

Stating that Tiruchy district had a total of 634 accident cases, Shri Pradeep Kumar said that the death of a person in a road accident had badly affected the family members of the victim and their livelihood.

Exhorting the students to be aware of the traffic rules and follow them, Shri Pradeep Kumar said that the younger generation should take the message to their family members, fellow students and the community at large. The aim of the awareness program was to sensitize the students towards road safety and rules and reduce the accident rate in the long run.

Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, M. Sathiya Priya said that 150 people had died and 400 others were injured within Tiruchi city limits due to road accidents last year. Accidents can be prevented to a great extent by following road rules and through awareness programmes.

Ms. Sathiya Priya said that the city police have planned to organize more awareness programs this year involving school students.

The event was jointly organized by the District Administration, Tiruchi City Police, Child Welfare Committee and Youth Xnora International. The mega awareness program for school students will run till February 25, during which awareness will also be created among school students about child rights, cyber crime, anti-drugs, self-defense, yoga, environment and safe and unsafe touch.
