Congress leader and senior advocate P Chidambaram on Wednesday faced heavy opposition from a section of lawyers, claiming to be Congress supporters, for representing agro-processing firm Kventor outside the Calcutta High Court. Lawyers raised slogans against Chidambaram, showed him black robes, called him “TMC sympathizer” and held him responsible for the party’s poor performance in West Bengal.

Advocate Kaustav Bagchi, one of the protesters, said that Chidambaram, who is also the former Union Finance Minister, was appearing on behalf of an institution whose purchase of shares was being objected to by the President of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. Was. “Mr. Chidambaram is a member of the CWC (Congress Working Committee) and a very important leader.”

Bagchi said he led the protest not as a lawyer but “as a Congress worker” and added that party workers would treat any leader acting against the interests of the party in West Bengal equally. When contacted by PTI, Choudhary said the protest was a “natural” reaction of some Congress supporters. “I have heard that some Congress supporters present in the Calcutta High Court protested. I believe it was his natural reaction,” Chowdhury told Berhampore.

On party colleague Chidambaram fighting the case, Choudhary said in the professional world one has the right to choose his/her own option. “It’s a professional world. It depends on the person… No one can dictate that.”

Alleging that the West Bengal government had sold the shares of Mother Dairy, which were then sold jointly by the state and Kventor Agro at “throwaway price” to a private partner, Choudhary filed a petition before the High Court. inquiry was demanded. Case.

The state’s interest was adversely affected by the sale, claimed Chaudhry’s lawyer Bikash Bhattacharya and said that Kventor had soon sold a part of the shares to a Singapore-based company at a very high price. The state has claimed before the court that it has substantially sold the shares to Kventor and that there is no irregularity.

This argument was supported by the company represented by Chidambaram. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava on Thursday fixed the matter for further hearing, before which the matter is being debated.
