The Union Health Ministry said that the cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in India crossed 130 crore on Wednesday.

More than 72 lakh vaccines were administered till 7 pm on Wednesday.

The daily vaccination numbers are expected to increase with the compilation of the final report for the day by late night, the ministry said.

The nationwide vaccination campaign was launched on January 16, with healthcare workers being vaccinated in the first phase. The vaccination of frontline workers started from February 2.

The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination began on March 1 for people above 60 years of age and 45 years and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

The country began vaccination for all people over the age of 45 from 1 April. The government then decided to expand its vaccination campaign by allowing everyone over the age of 18 to be vaccinated from May 1.
