Toyota is testing its ethanol-powered hybrid Corolla Altis in India and we got a chance to test it out at the iCAT test facility. The vehicle in question was the Brazilian model Corolla Altis which is not ready to come to India and has been brought to India only for testing purposes. It can run on blended petrol of over 20% ethanol, an alternative fuel that our country is capable of producing indigenously. Bio-ethanol can be made for surplus crops and even for ‘stubble’ which is burnt by farmers every year. On top of this, ethanol does not produce PM2.5 particles and can also significantly improve air quality.
