Toyota halts production in Japan over shortage

Toyota Motor Co. on Friday extended production stoppages at some factories in Japan because of a shortage of components shipped from parts plants in Southeast Asia.

Toyota said in a press release that the latest halt would cut car production by 9,000 vehicles after restrictions announced on Thursday affected production of its Lexus models and its four-wheel-drive Land Cruiser.

Although limited, the cuts come as Toyota tries to make up for lost production thanks to earlier supply-chain disruptions in Malaysia and Vietnam, which forced it to trim vehicle production, even in countries such as China. Markets resumed demand for cars as the coronavirus lockdown ended.

The world’s largest carmaker by volume said it is sticking to the annual production target set in September to build 9 million vehicles by the end of March.
