The Toyota Hyryder has been under development for some time and will get the badged sibling of Maruti Suzuki when it goes on sale later this year. The model is internationally codenamed Toyota D22 and is said to be based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) modular platform. The new offering will hit the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor and more in the segment.

In addition, the new Hyryder could be powered by a plug-in hybrid engine, which would also explain the ‘Hy’ in the name. Toyota is already offering the hybrid powertrain on the Camry and Vellfire models, and is expected to bring a more affordable option to the Haider when the SUV goes on sale. It could be similar to the technology seen on the new Honda City Hybrid that went on sale recently. Essentially, the system gets a robust electric motor and battery pack which allows it to cover greater distances on electric mode only. The petrol motor acts as a range extender to recharge the battery and kick in at higher speeds. The battery is also recharged using regenerative braking.

It is likely that Hyder and Hycross will use the same petrol-hybrid powertrain in India and will be exported to different markets as well.

The hybrid powertrain promises better efficiency as well as lower tailpipe emissions. It will also help the automaker to make up for the shortage of diesel engines. It is likely that Toyota and Maruti Suzuki may offer a more affordable petrol-only engine option on the lower variants to keep the entry prices on the SUV under control.

Meanwhile, Toyota Innova Hycross is likely to be the name of the new generation model that will be paired with the Crysta. The new offering is expected to be based on the TNGA-C platform shared with the Corolla internationally and the MPV will be moved to a monocoque architecture instead of the ladder-on-frame chassis seen on the current variant. It brings better cabin space and comfort along with better driving dynamics, lower weight and higher fuel efficiency. The Toyota Hyder is expected to arrive in June or early July this year, while the Innova Hycross is expected to arrive at the end of the year, probably around the festive season.
