Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday announced that it will be made mandatory to implement it in at least 1,200 central government-run schools across the country from the 2023-24 academic session.

Toys, puzzles, posters, puppets, playbooks and flash cards will be new tools found in the ‘magic box’ to teach children aged 3-6.

Launching new teaching-learning material for the foundational stages, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday announced that it will be made mandatory to be implemented in at least 1,200 central government-run schools across the country from the 2023-24 academic session .

under the new national Education Policy (NEP), 2020, the government launched a new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Foundational Stages (3-8 Years) on October 20 last year. NCF insists on teaching students in their mother tongue for eight years in both public and private schools. It focuses on conceptual learning rather than rote learning.

The ‘magic box’ with tools such as puzzles, toys, posters, worksheets and drawing books will be used to teach children through storytelling, conversations, poems, rhymes and magic tricks including folklore, cultural and social context.

The NEP envisages a ‘5+3+3+4’ curriculum pedagogic structure. The Department of School Education and Literacy under the ministry has constituted a National Steering Committee under the chairmanship of K Kasturirangan to develop the NCF for each stage. The NCF for the rest of the classes is currently being prepared and will be launched in phases.

dynamic learning

NCF has play-based learning at its core for the foundational stages, while there will be no textbook to teach these classes. Pradhan said, “I have entrusted the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) with the task of providing reading material to 1200 Kendriya Vidyalayas from this academic session and teaching children with new education from this year itself.”

He further said that the textbooks of classes I and II would be released soon. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been entrusted with the task of developing these books in 13 languages. “The NCERT may send two magic wands to each of the State Councils to adopt the new material. It will also constitute teams for orientation of states in teaching material. Schools can make their own pitara and it is not necessary to use the same box, as it is a dynamic process and the contents will change with time,” said the minister.

He said that NCERT has developed a handbook for teachers mapping the objectives of the curriculum for future training of teachers at the grassroots level.

Pradhan also said that as a national think-tank, NCERT should organize a conclave of start-ups in the country to share their ideas and develop tools for learning.

Referring to the recent student suicides in two IITs of the country, he said that the NCF has been designed from the very beginning to remove fear and pressure from the minds of students, where the foundation itself is strong and based on vital – Idea.
