Traffic jam in Delhi continues to trouble commuters for the third day

Chirag Delhi flyover was closed for 50 days from Sunday.

New Delhi:

Traffic jams continued to plague commuters for the third consecutive day on Wednesday after some major parts of Delhi were closed for repair and construction work.

The Chirag Delhi flyover was closed for 50 days from Sunday, while a portion of the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48) between Rangpuri and Rajokri was closed for 90 days from Tuesday.

Keshav Kumar, a trader, said, “The situation is similar in South and South-East Delhi area. I came from Noida and thought the Ashram flyover would bring relief, but no idea about the bumper-to-bumper traffic in Chirag Delhi.” Now, I have to go to Gurugram and am planning to take metro due to the traffic situation.”

Vrinda Bhatia, who works in central Delhi, said she reached home on Tuesday after spending two hours on the chowked roads.

“I work in central Delhi and commute from Gurugram. On Tuesday, when I was going to work, the traffic was fine in the morning.

“However, when I was returning home, it seemed like the whole of Delhi choked. It took me two-and-a-half hours to reach Gurugram. Today, I took the metro to office and was thinking of continuing till ” re-opens,” Bhatia said.

Several other commuters also shared updates of the traffic situation on Twitter.

One of them said that he was stuck for 35 minutes and Chirag walked only 150 meters in Delhi.

Others said that there was heavy traffic jam at Ashram and there was heavy traffic between Kapashera to Rajokri.

Passengers also took alternate routes to reach their destinations.

“We were receiving regular updates about the closure of the Chirag Delhi flyover and the portion on NH-18 through news and social media.

Ankit Upadhyay, an MNC employee, said, “From Monday, I am taking the Bijwasan route to Gurugram. Though there is more traffic than usual, the stretch is more convenient than the main NH-48.”

Traffic was also affected in West Delhi due to the construction work, with the traffic police asking people to avoid this stretch.

Delhi Traffic Police tweeted, “Traffic is slow from Raja Garden towards Britannia Chowk due to construction work of Punjabi Bagh flyover. There is a delay of 10-15 minutes on this stretch. Please avoid this stretch.”

PWD Minister Atishi on Tuesday directed the officials to complete the maintenance work of Chirag Delhi flyover within a month instead of 50 days.

The minister held a meeting with senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) to resolve the issue on priority basis.
