Transfer news: Bayern Munich sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus

Bayern Munich on Tuesday announced the signing of a five-year deal with Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.

“Mathijs de Ligt was a top target for us. With signings like these, the big goals we have can be achieved. The future face of our team is rapidly shaping up,” said Bayern president Herbert Heiner said.

Reports in German media put the cost of Bayern acquiring the Dutch central defender at 70 million euros and a 10 million bonus ($82 million in total).

Bayern will use proceeds from Polish striker Robert Lewandowski’s transfer to Barcelona to help finance the move, which is estimated at more than €45 million.

“This transfer is an important building block in the overall concept that we are gradually implementing. De Ligt should become a mainstay at FC Bayern” said Hainer.

His arrival followed the arrival of Sadio Mane from Liverpool as Bayern began their new post-Lewandowski-era era.

De Ligt joined Ajax Academy at the age of nine, making his debut for the record Dutch champions at the age of 17.

He became their youngest ever captain, and moved to Juventus in 2019 after 117 appearances (13 goals), and a league and cup double.

His time with Juve earned him more silverware with a Serie A title, an Italian Cup and a Super Cup.

Internationally, he was the youngest Netherlands debutant since 1945 and earned 38 caps for his national side, scoring twice.

He said he had won from Bayern’s point of view.

“I felt genuine appreciation from the game’s management, coach and board from the very beginning, which reassured me,” he said in a press statement issued by the buying club.

“On top of this, FC Bayern is a brilliantly run club with great objectives. I am very happy that I am now a part of the story of FC Bayern.
