Transfer News: Mesut Ozil Joins 2020 Turkish Champions Istanbul Basaksehir

German World Cup-winning midfielder Mesut zil signed for 2020 Turkish champions Basaksehir on Thursday, a day after leaving rivals Fenerbahce.

“Our club has signed a one-year contract with Mesut Ozil with the option of one more year,” Basaksher said in a statement.

Basaksehir is known for her close relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was the best man at Ozil’s 2019 wedding to former Miss Turkey, Amin Gulse.

Ozil, 33, split with Fenerbahçe, with two years of his deal still going on.

He joined Istanbul less than a year and a half ago, but has been dropped from the first team since late March following a dispute.

New manager George Jesus made it clear he would not rush to reverse that decision when he took office in early June.
