Trinamool MP’s debate on raising the price of ‘Brinjal’ in Lok Sabha; why over here

Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar cutting raw brinjal shows a new way to protest rising prices in Lok Sabha. After several disruptions and two forced adjournments, the debate on price hike finally took place in the lower house on Monday.

Thanking the chair for debating the price hike, even if it is after a long time, Dastidar simply asked whether the central government expects people to start eating raw vegetables due to the skyrocketing cooking gas prices. .

She stood up and then took a bite of a raw vegetable to make her point during the price hike debate as some onlookers laughed. He said that high LPG prices are making cooking costly for the poor.

“I thank the chair for allowing a debate on the price hike,” Dastidar reportedly said, “Does the government want us to eat raw vegetables? Then he added a bit of raw brinjal to show how the gas was so expensive that citizens would have to start eating raw food.

According to the reports, Dastidar was quoted as saying, “The prices of LPG cylinders have increased four times in the last few months,” adding, “From Rs 600, now it is Rs 1,100.” He further said that the Center should reduce the prices of cylinders.

In July, the price of LPG was increased by Rs 50 per cylinder. This was the eighth increase in the last one year. The price of non-subsidized LPG is now Rs 1,053 per 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi.

After weeks of protests over price hike and GST, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will address the Lok Sabha later in the evening. Four Congress MPs were also suspended for causing disruption in the House over the issue of price hike, but their suspension was revoked.

Dastidar was also involved in the Trinamool Congress’s protest in the Parliament premises demanding discussion in the House on the issue of women’s safety. The party’s Lok Sabha member Dola Sen and Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor were also part of the protest. They presented notices to discuss “the need for prevention of crime against women” in the light of “latest reported incidents”. The notice was sent by MPs after Gujarat Rural Development Minister Arjunsinh Chauhan was accused of raping and illegally taking a woman hostage.
