Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 12 February said that Tripura was facing a “triple trouble” of the Congress, CPI(M) and Tipra Motha in the upcoming assembly elections.

Mr Shah also said that the Left party, which had cheated tribals in Tripura for long, was now projecting a tribal leader as the face of the chief minister to “cheat” the people.

At a rally in Chandipur in Unakoti district, Shah said, “If you want to avoid this ‘triple crisis’, vote for the double engine BJP government.”

Jitendra Chowdhary is one of the top CPI(M) leaders from the tribal community, and is being seen as a prime ministerial candidate in case the Left-Congress alliance comes to power in Tripura.

The CPI(M) and the Congress are jointly contesting the elections to the 60-member assembly to be held on February 16.

Shri Shah said that the coming together of the Congress and the Left parties is a sign that they have accepted defeat in the elections to the BJP.

The Union minister also promised housing for the poor in Tripura by 2025.
