Tripura bandh called after students allege attack on police

Tripura Police has ordered a probe and has handed over the policemen accused of the incident.

Guwahati:

Tripura’s mighty Tribal Students Federation (TSF) has called for a state-wide strike on Monday from morning till evening to protest the alleged thrashing of two tribal students for parking their two-wheeler on the way to Chief Minister Biplab Deb’s convoy.

Police had registered a case against two tribal students, though they claimed to be innocent and claimed that their two-wheeler had broken down and they had no intention of blocking the chief minister’s path on Thursday.

The students have alleged that not only were they thrashed mercilessly but the police refused to register a complaint of physical assault against the traffic police personnel who assaulted them. One of the students also alleged that a police officer hit him in the groin as well, injuring him grievously.

While the Tripura Police has ordered a probe and handed over the policemen accused of the incident, the furious TSF has called for a bandh.

Addressing a press conference at Agartala Press Club on Sunday, TSF advisor Upendra Debbarma announced a bandh in the presence of the organization’s general secretary John Debbarma and other office bearers and also demanded strict punishment to the policemen.

This is the second complaint of excessive use of force by the police in Agartala in less than a week.

Earlier this month, members of the LGBT community complained against the state police that some of them were forcibly stripped in public to check their gender.
