Tripura BJP MLAs to meet on March 6 to elect CM

A senior party leader said that the newly elected BJP MLAs will hold a meeting on Monday at the party office here at Col Chowmuhani to elect the chief minister.

In the recently concluded elections, the BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, while its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), won one seat.

Party’s media in-charge Suneet Sarka said, “The newly elected members of the party will elect the leader of the BJP legislators at the party’s election office on Monday. Sambit Patra, the party’s northeast coordinator, will also attend the meeting.” PTI,

However, he declined to comment on who could be the leader, who would also be the chief minister of the state.

There is speculation that Manik Saha, who has already submitted his resignation, is likely to be the next chief minister of the second BJP-IPFT government considering his performance within the short span of running the state.

One of the vice-presidents of the party said, “He is a well-educated gentleman and a man with a clean image. I hope no other name comes up in his place in the meeting.”

“Mr. Saha took charge at a difficult time and led the party to a significant victory in the elections. He deserves to be the next chief minister,” he said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Darma has already visited the northeastern state to measure the waters and has held meetings with the chief minister and senior party colleagues on the possible formation of the next cabinet.

Party sources said Mr. Sarma has a Meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on the composition of the cabinet and its leader on Sunday to ensure a smooth transition.
