Tripura municipal elections: ‘Balance played’ for TMC? As BJP wins the battle for prestige, know what it means for the saffron camp

Agartala was painted saffron as BJP supporters took to the streets to celebrate the party’s thumping victory in the Tripura civic polls. In the last three months before the elections, the TMC was continuously accusing the BJP of violence and harassment. However, the Mamata Banerjee-led party is not bothered by the defeat. The TMC feels this is only the beginning, while the Left feels it is the main opposing force. Political analysts say that the results of this small election will have a definite impact on the 2023 assembly elections. Here’s what the civic polls results will mean:

What does BJP victory mean?

Despite all the allegations of violence and harassment against the BJP in Tripura, the saffron party is well ahead of the opposition. Voting took place under the orders of the Supreme Court and heavy security force was deployed. According to the BJP, the elections were free and fair and the mandate of the people is with them.

However, TMC is a matter of concern for BJP. TMC had come to Tripura four months ago but has managed to jump to second place at various places in that time. The Left has already been in Tripura for a long time, but despite this, the TMC came second.

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar tweeted, “Congratulations to all the workers of @BJP4Tripura & Chief Minister Shri @BjpBiplab for a resounding victory in Tripura Municipal Elections. The people of Tripura have put their trust in the BJP and rejected the opposition parties, including the TMC. The fake drama of TMC had no effect on the people.”

What do the results mean for TMC?

The TMC has taken a toll in its progress, and said it was only the “beginning” for the party in Tripura. TMC won one seat in Ambassa municipality. In Ambassa, the party came second in 10 out of 15 wards, while in Teliyamura, it came second in 13 out of 15 wards.

In Agartala Municipal Corporation also TMC is at number two in different places. Political analysts say that he is at number two in two months, but if he continues at this pace, he can become a threat to the BJP in future. Sushmita Dev said, “We salute our workers that with this threat, they are still fighting and from here our fight becomes more confident.” A party insider said the TMC was expecting this result.

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, “Extraordinary for a party with negligible presence to successfully contest municipal elections and emerge as the main opposition in the state with over 20% vote share.”

Analysts also said that as an opposition, TMC was not compromising and if they kept up the good work, they would do well. In the 2018 West Bengal Panchayat elections, the TMC did not allow the opposition to file nominations. This had an adverse effect on the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP won 18 seats. It may happen that without the opposition, (in Tripura also, it is alleged that the opposition was not allowed to vote), the TMC may benefit in 2023.

Political analyst Vishwanath Chakraborty said, “Interestingly, the division of opposition votes in Tripura helped the BJP, which is also an important factor. The opposition should think on this. This division is also important from a national point of view.”
