Inspired by critical comments online, French talk show radio channel RMC hosted a debate on Monday whether streetwear’s sight on the president on such an occasion was “shocking”, with the presenter Estelle Dennis Insisted that there was “a dress code to be respected”.
Le Figaro newspaper called him a “trainer of discord”.
Other media outlets sought to correct the growing narrative on social media, spread by right-wing politicians and critics of the president, that Macron wore trainers to the Queen’s funeral, which took place on Monday.
“No, Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron did not pay their respects to the Queen in the trainers,” said an article in the national TF1 channel.
By the time the French leader and his wife paid their respects in front of the coffin on Sunday, the two had changed into more formal attire with Macron in a black suit and black tie.
The couple wore similar formal attire to the state funeral Westminster Abbey Where he reached in a bus with other leaders.
The photographs drew attention to Macron’s expensive taste, however – a possible liability for a man by critics as “president of the rich” and the summer aftermath in which he was depicted using a jet-ski on his vacation.
According to Le Figaro, the trainers in question are made by luxury French fashion brand JM Weston, and a pair sells for 570 euros ($570).
