TRS, BJP on Cantonment Road Row, BJP seeks sedition case against KTR for plan to snatch electricity, water

The closure of roads in the cantonment areas in Secunderabad and Golconda took a political turn with a heated exchange of words between the ruling TRS and BJP leaders. Municipal Corporation Minister KT Rama Rao announced in the budget session of the assembly that the government was planning to cut power and water supplies to the cantonment areas for not supporting development activities.

KT Rama Rao slammed the Center and the Defense Ministry and the concerned authorities for failing to open the closed roads despite repeated appeals during the night hours, causing heavy traffic problems to the people.

Reacting strongly, BJP state president and MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar challenged the minister to cut off electricity and water if he has the courage. “Cantonment officials are known to protect Hyderabad and how is the government’s plan to cut power and water,” he asked. He hit out at the government and ministers for failing to collect electricity bills in the old city area and is planning to cut water and electricity in the cantonment areas. He said that announcing shutdown of electricity and water in the cantonment areas in the assembly is tantamount to sedition.

The BJP state president said that he would see how the government would stop the basic needs of water and electricity in the cantonment areas. Recently, the Defense Ministry also slammed that the cantonment areas have not been developed to harass the state government which is demanding the Center to open roads and allow development works.

KT Rama Rao directed the Special Chief Secretary to convene a meeting with the Cantonment Board and Defense officers to resolve the issue. KTR said, “I am announcing in the assembly, we are fed up with the defense officials on the opening of the roads and will see if they will come down if we cut off the power and water supply.”

It may be said here that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao wrote in vain letters to the Defense Ministry for permission to open roads or build other roads in the cantonment areas.

Also, the state government made several appeals to open the roads and allow new roads to be built to ease the traffic problems.

The BJP state president warned that they would file a case against KTR as a traitor for his remarks about stopping water and electricity in the cantonment areas. They demanded that KTR should apologize for his remarks in the assembly that electricity and water would be cut in the cantonment areas.

BJP national vice-president DK Aruna also hit out at the minister for his remarks about the shutdown of electricity and water supply in the cantonment areas. They demanded that a case of sedition be registered against the minister for his remarks. Aruna wanted to know whether the cantonment area, which belongs to the Center and the Defense Ministry, belonged to the Kalvakuntala family. This only escalated the issue and the Center is yet to come up with an amicable solution in this regard. People also demanded that the roads be opened for their use and to no avail.
