HYDERABAD: The city police have decided to try the minors as adults in the Jubilee Hills gang rape case to ensure that they get maximum punishment. Two of the accused minors are the son and nephew of an AIMIM MLA, while the third is the son of a politician holding a key position in a key Telangana government body.
In 2019, a 17-year-old was sentenced to two life terms by a local court in Hyderabad after he was presented as an adult for molesting and murdering a 10-year-old boy.
DCP De Joel Davis said the police would request Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to recommend that minors allegedly involved in gang rape be tried as adults. “We are focusing on gathering evidence. After the chargesheet is filed, we will ask JJB To recommend that they be tried as adults,” the DCP said.
Police had on Tuesday announced the arrest of six people, including five minors, in connection with the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in a parked car. Under the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015, offenses for which the minimum punishment is imprisonment of seven years or more are classified as heinous.
Since all the minors in the case were booked for committing a heinous crime and they are all above 16 years of age, the JJB will first conduct a preliminary assessment with respect to their mental and physical capacity to commit such an offence.
