When it was launched in 2018, the TVS NTorq 125 blew our minds. It came with a segment first, Bluetooth connectivity, featuring turn-by-turn navigation via the TVS SmartXonect system, and offered a mix of performance and mobility that could have been instantly preferred. The change in Bharat Stage VI (BS6) emission norms resulted in the NTorq 125 being slightly lighter than the first generation scooter, though it offered better fuel consumption figures. But the NTorq 125 still had the same sporty dynamics that made it a popular choice in its segment.

The top-spec Ntorq 125 Race XP now gets two riding modes, improved performance and a segment-first voice command system. But is it worth the hype, or is it just a matter of bragging rights to get minor performance upgrades and riding modes that feel fake at best? We try to find some answers.

performance and mobility
The Race XP engine is the same 125 cc, 3-valve unit, but gets better combustion while offering more performance. So the maximum power has increased by 0.81 bhp, and similarly, the peak torque output has also increased by 0.3 Nm. and that’s not all; It is also the only petrol-powered scooter to offer two riding modes, Street and Race. Maximum power is now 10.06 bhp at 7,000 rpm and peak torque is 10.8 Nm, which kicks in at 5,500 rpm.
And with a weight reduction of 2kg, the Race XP feels faster than the city in-dash at around 60kmph. In fact, from a standstill, Street Mode and Race Mode hardly provide any noticeable difference in performance. And it’s only at high-speed highway speeds between 65-85kmph, the race mode feels a bit punctured.
The dynamics are well sorted and the NTorq 125 is absolutely at home and darting in and out of traffic. Performance and acceleration are smooth and refined, up to three-digit speeds. Keeping its sporty personality in mind, the NTorq 125 has always focused on maneuverability and outright comfort.
The suspension on the Race XP feels a bit firm, not back-braking, but it won’t go over awkward potholes, speedbreakers, or broken patches, without sabotaging the ride quality, and felt every ups and downs. It’s not a deal breaker, and there’s more to it than great handling, but if it’s just looking for pure comfort and a plush ride, the Race XP isn’t the best place to start looking to get past the broken patch Is.
Tech and Ergonomics
The instrument console remains the same LCD unit, and now gets an updated TVS SmartXonect system, which allows the rider to sync the smartphone with the scooter via Bluetooth using the TVS Connect app. While standard features such as call alerts, SMS alerts, trip meter, lap timer, acceleration timer (0-60 kmph) remain, the updated system now has voice command assist, which can be used by a pair of wired headphones in the smartphone. Can be carried, or with a helmet mounted Bluetooth communication system. The NTorq 125 Race XP is now India’s first petrol powered scooter with a range of riding modes. , and also using voice commands.
There is a long list of voice commands that can be used to navigate to the nearest fuel station, frequently visited location, or point of interest, which will then be displayed on a panel with turn-by-turn navigation instructions . You can also view missed call alerts, dial the last call number, increase or decrease the brightness of the console and set Do Not Disturb feature through the voice command feature. It’s a fairly exhaustive list, but frankly, while gizmos raise the scale of bragging rights, personally, I find a lot of them distracting. But new-age customers may really pay attention to such technology-rich features.
design
Being the top-spec variant in the TVS NTorq 125 range, the Race XP packs some interesting features along with new livery to make it stand out. This is the fifth variant in the Ntorq range, and comes in a sporty red color shade, mixed with white, gray and red elements. And this is the only shade in which the NTorq 125 Race XP is available. The livery includes a generous dose of Race XP graphics on the bodywork, and even the 12-inch alloy wheels are finished in red to give the sporty appeal, further justification. “Race” in the Race XP moniker.
Overall, the shape and silhouette remain the same as the regular NTorq 125, with just the bright colors adding to that allure in the Race XP. What hasn’t changed is the multi-function key, which still doesn’t get a remote hatch opening function, so will need to be used in a separate slot to take the key out and access the underseat storage. The 22-litre underseat storage space is ample though, and comes with an LED light, as well as a USB charging socket.
If practicality and space to move the legs around is needed, there’s still no storage inside the front apron, and the footboard space is somewhat limited. It’s still a fast and pretty looking scooter, and the exclusive livery gives the Race XP a sense of fresh appeal and youthful energy. According to TVS, the Race XP has reduced by 2 kg over the standard Ntorq 125, which weighs 116 kg.
cost
TVS NTorq 125 Race XP is the top-spec variant of this series, so it is priced accordingly. At ₹84,025 (ex-showroom), it is around ₹7,000 more expensive than the standard disc-brake version of the Ntorq 125, which costs ₹77,320 (ex-showroom). For someone looking for more color options, there is the Super Squad variant, which costs ₹83,025 (ex-showroom), but you won’t get the riding modes, extra performance, or voice command system that comes with the Race XP .
Decision
TVS NTorq 125 Race XP definitely ups the game in the 125cc scooter segment. It looks great, has great maneuverability, and is loaded with features and technology, no other petrol-powered scooter even comes close to it. Above all, the NTorq 125 Race XP still retains its fun-to-ride character, and that alone makes it to recommend as a performance-oriented scooter that scores right up there with the best available on sale right now . The additional features, riding modes, and others, just make it more attractive for the new generation scooter buyer. So, yes, it’s still a winner, and yet a great package, if features and performance are factors that make it to be a primary consideration.
