The Congress lost Punjab to the AAP and could not snatch any of the four other states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – from the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi had resigned as Congress President after the party suffered a second consecutive defeat in the general elections in 2019. Sonia Gandhi who took over the reins of the party again as interim president had also offered to step down in August 2020 following an open rebellion by a section. The number of leaders, called G-23, but was urged by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to continue.

In today’s meeting, the G-23 leaders, who have questioned the leadership and pressed for changes in the organisation, are likely to raise the issue again.

G-23 leaders had suggested corrective measures after the last round of assembly elections, when the Congress lost Puducherry and failed to make a mark in Kerala, Assam and West Bengal, but there was little movement on that front. .

These leaders had met on Friday evening at the residence of senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to chalk out their strategy ahead of the crucial CWC meeting.

Meanwhile, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has dismissed “false and mischievous” reports claiming that members of the Gandhi family will resign from all party posts, thus ruling out any major tectonic changes in the party. done.
