Near here O. Two women workers were burnt to death after a fire broke out in a unit of a security matchbox in Mettupatti on Wednesday.
Identification of the injured Mettupatti resident V. Murugalakshmi (53) and Chhatrapatti resident M. Mariammal (45). Murugalakshmi is said to have suffered 50% burns and was admitted to a private hospital.
Police suspect that friction during handling of chemical-dipped sticks may have started the fire at the Selvarenuga matchbox unit at around 3.30 pm.
Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Sattur Station Officer S. Kathiresan reached the spot and brought the fire under control for about an hour.
The Sattur taluk police is investigating.
