The driver was returning after dropping a senior police officer

Alappuzha (Kerala):

Two people were killed on Sunday near Thalavadi in this coastal district of Kerala after a police jeep rammed their two-wheeler while they were returning to their home in Kottayam.

The accident took place around 3 am when a police jeep allotted to the DSP of the District Crime Records Bureau rammed into a two-wheeler belonging to two people who were returning home from the Alappuzha beach, an official of the Alappuzha North police station said. ,

“It is believed that the driver of the police jeep fell asleep behind the wheel and that led to the accident,” the officer said.

A case has been registered under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence), which carries a maximum jail term of two years, they said.

Police said the driver was returning after dropping the DSP, who was on duty related to New Year celebrations.

Police said that according to the families of the two men – one aged 35 and the other 22 – had left the house saying they were going to church.

Further action will be taken after the completion of the probe, the official said.
