‘U’ season 4, part 1 review: Penn Badgley returns with more guilty pleasures and murder-mysteries

A scene from season four of ‘U’

season 4 of You So silly it’s unbridled fun. Split in two, the next five episodes are due out on March 9, 2023. The psychological thriller (yes, that was its original trajectory) based on Caroline Kepnes’ remarkably intense social-media tearing novels, finds Joe (Penn Badgley) in London.

Now a university professor with tweeds and suspenders (he has been described as a “bargain bin Colin Firth”), the serial killer-turned-book lover goes by the name of Jonathan Moore. Rather than pit his conscientious students against each other in ideological battle, he spies on their neighbors, Malcolm (Stephen Hagan) and Kate (Charlotte Richie).

The debauched Malcolm befriends Joe and introduces him to a corrupt gang that bathes in booze, racketeering and privilege. There is Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper), who is as sweet as she is rich. Phoebe is seeing the equally wealthy and slightly dimwitted Adam (Lucas Gage), the owner of the Sundial House where the group hangs out.

You Season 4 (Part 1)

Episode: 5

Running Time: 43 to 54 minutes

Producers: Greg Berlanti, Sera Gamble

Starring: Penn Badgley, Tati Gabrielle, Charlotte Richie, Tillie Keeper, Amy-Leigh Hickman, Ed Spellers, Lucas Gage

Storyline: Joe is now in the middle of a whodunit as suspect, victim and detective in London

The gang consists of showman Simon (Edan Cheng), the child of a Chinese technocrat, and Sophie, (Nicky Lin), a powerful influencer. Gemma Grahame-Green (Eve Austin) gets an A for weirdness, forcing her chauffeur to run over woodland creatures for fun. Blessing (Ojioma Whenu) is a Nigerian princess with degrees, money and no time for lots of people. Roald (Ben Wiggins) and Connie (Dario Coates) complete the fallen group.

The icy, cruel-witted Kate, whose voice is as sharp as her blunt bob, seems like the only one who works for a living. Rhys (Ed Speleers), a poor boy who attended Oxford on a scholarship, is the outsider in the group. He is a successful writer, hopeful of the mayoralty and endears Joe with his viciously precise pen drawings including “Simon tearing through people like Christmas presents”.

In the first episode, Joe is determined to start fresh, proving that he has abandoned his murderous ways from last season after leaving his love, Marianne (Tati Gabrielle) to go and take her newborn son to a foster care facility. Leaving with family. However, blood and books can never be too far from Joe, no matter what name he goes by, and the first episode ends with Joe waking up from a night of restlessness to the excess of a corpse on his desk. Is.

And he’s back in the bone saw, protective goggles, and black bin bag; Does he travel with a body disposal kit? Suddenly Joe finds himself in a whodunit, which he describes as “the lowest form of literature”. A lot

One of his students, Nadia, (Amy-Leigh Hickman) informs him about the basic rules of whodunits, including “the first suspect is always the second victim,” without mentioning the twins. As each entitled friend is cornered by an eat-the-rich killer, against the backdrop of a media-feeding frenzy, the remainder of the group hole up in Phoebe’s country mansion.

who finds himself in an episode of ” Crown directed by Guy Ritchie” as he runs for his life, tries to find the killer, and gets rid of a few additional suspects. While Vampire Weekend sings the Oxford comma, and mentions Edgar Allan Poe , there is not much literature love in this version You, and the horror of the faerie, who secretes a garrote in a hole cut out of a book.

The cast is in on the fun and acts accordingly, posing carefree in the designer couple, while Joe’s inner monologue maliciously rips through the various facades. Badgley says the show is taking a new direction and does it by straying into murder-mystery territory. While season four won’t stand up to any kind of scrutiny, its persuasive plot and smart-ish writing ensure five episodes zip along on the well-oiled tracks of guilty pleasure. Will March 9 come already?
