Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link: Officials said that in a major development, the Northern Railway has achieved success in the Escape Tunnel in its Kashmir Rail Link project.

The construction work of about 10 km long escape tunnel between Sumbar and Sangaldan station in Katra-Banihal section of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a national project in Jammu and Kashmir, was completed on 26 July.

Ashutosh Gangal, General Manager, Northern Railway said, “We have achieved a major milestone in the USBRL project by implementing the break-through of Escape Tunnel T-48 between Sumbar and Sangaldan station.”

The escape is precisely achieved in the tunnel’s line and level break-through. The T-48 is an escape tunnel in a modified horseshoe shape with a length of 9.694 km and a width of 5.30 m.

With a view to provide an alternative and a reliable transport system for Jammu and Kashmir, the Government has undertaken the work of connecting the 272 km long rail line from Udhampur to Baramulla to the Kashmir Valley with the railway network under the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project. had started.

The alignment of USBRL involves construction of a large number of tunnels and bridges in highly rugged mountainous terrain with difficult and complex Himalayan geology.

The project comprises 38 tunnels (combined length of 119 km), the longest tunnel (T-49) has a length of 12.75 km – and once completed, it will be the longest transport tunnel in the country.

There are 927 bridges (combined length of 13 km). These bridges include the 1,315-metre-long Chenab Bridge with a height of 359 meters above river level, which will be the world’s highest railway bridge.
