The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has accused Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat and demanded his resignation calling him incompetent to become an MLA.

SDPI state president Abdul Majeed told reporters in Udupi on February 17 that the MLA should take moral responsibility for escalation of the issue and resign. He was responsible for the issue becoming an international controversy as Mr. Bhat failed to discharge his duties as a legislator.

“We do responsible politics and there is no need to play with the future of the student community by doing politics,” he said.

He said the MLA did not intervene when the students asked the college principal and management to allow them to wear hijab. Mr. Bhat became active when students were denied admission to classes. At that time the students sought help from a student union (Campus Front of India).

The issue could have been resolved amicably, Mr Majid said and alleged that the MLA did not pursue this course of action. “The future of the student community is at stake because of the anti-Muslim attitude of the MLA.
