UEFA on Friday apologized to spectators for their “horrifying and disturbing” experience ahead of the Champions League final, saying no football fan should face such scenes.
Thousands of supporters were unable to reach the showpiece match of European club football despite having real tickets, in which French police also used tear gas against children.

“UEFA would like to sincerely apologize to all spectators who experienced or witnessed the horrific and disturbing events in the build-up to the UEFA Champions League Final at the Stade de France in Paris on 28 May 2022, which should have been Celebration of European club football.
“No football fan should be put in that position, and it should not happen again,” European football’s governing body said in a statement.
Spanish giants Real Madrid beat England’s Liverpool 1-0, but the match was completely clouded by chaos outside the stadium.

Before the game, with thousands of Liverpool fans waiting hours to enter the arena with tickets, French police used tear gas and pepper spray on the crowd.
Some Liverpool supporters said they feared being crushed after small holes were used to filter the queues.
Fans from both sides also said they were victims of crime after the match, with many reporting beatings and looting took place outside the stadium.
UEFA has launched an independent review aimed at finding the shortcomings and responsibilities of those involved in organizing the final.
