UEFA Nations League: Harry Kane penalty as England draw 1-1 against Germany

England captain Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal in a 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany by converting a late penalty in Munich on Tuesday.

Germany broke the deadlock when Jonas Hoffmann put the hosts ahead at the Allianz Arena, but Kane leveled off with two minutes to spare.

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck stumbled into Kane in the field and was awarded a penalty after a VAR review.

The Tottenham striker moved up to outright second – just three behind Wayne Rooney – on England’s all-time leading goalscorer list, surpassing Bobby Charlton’s total of 49.

“It’s a really cool feeling,” Kane told Channel Four.

“I had some early chances and thought this might be one of those days.”

“It’s good to have a goal and it’s a shame that we didn’t achieve it in the end,” Kane said.

Gareth Southgate’s side are at the bottom of Group A3 after a 1-0 loss to Hungary in Budapest last Saturday.

Southgate was “pleasing with a lot of parts” of England’s performance.

“The Germans are the masters of the tournament and it was a good test,” he told ZDF.

“Most of this the (England) team has played World Cup semi-finals and Euro 2020 final – he showed character to fight for a point. ,

Germany, who tour Hungary on Saturday, are one point above them in third as German coach Hansi Flick extended his unbeaten run to 11 games until September.

“We played a really good game, but weren’t rewarded for the performance,” Flick told ZDF.

Germany, playing in the shirt of their national women’s team, twice breached England’s defense without reward in the first half.

Thomas Mueller bowled the ball at England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but the whistle was already gone after an injury to Calvin Phillips, who was replaced by Jude Bellingham.

Hoffman then broke clear and fired Pickford, but after a VAR investigation, the attempt was aborted.

Neuer, who captained Germany for the 54th time to overthrow 2014 World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lamm, saved a reflex to deny Bukayo Saka.

England struggled to get the ball into the box, especially in the first half, when Kane was closely marshalled by the German defence.

Germany were finally rewarded for their pressure at the start of the second period.

Joshua Kimmich split the defense with a pass into the legs of Hoffman, who drilled into a shot that Pickford could only get off a glove.

Only a fine stop by Pickford prevented Mueller from making his 114th international appearance with a goal.

Neuer again came to Germany’s defense with another excellent save from Kane’s close effort.

However, the England captain did not rule out sending Noor the wrong way from the spot.

“It’s bitter to admit the equalizer is utterly stupid,” Hoffman said. “But we created good chances and it was a good performance.”
