UGC asks colleges to reduce use of plastic, seeks action taken report

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked higher educational institutions including colleges and universities to reduce the use of plastic, especially single-use plastic. He also asked colleges to dispose of plastic waste, suggesting that institutions can take measures to raise awareness about the cause. The notification came in continuation of the earlier guidelines issued in September 2019.

As per the notification, the UGC has identified “awareness programs to avoid the use of single-use plastic” under the 75-week long campaign ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ launched to celebrate the achievements of the people. and their country.

The objective of the campaign is to motivate and encourage citizens to take positive steps for the development of the country. Campaign speed and scale strive to increase visibility and reach around your chosen topics. A similar notice was also issued on June 7 requesting institutions to organize essay writing competitions and hackathons and strictly follow the guidelines of the commission.

The notification lists single-use plastics that are not to be fully used, including plastic and polystyrene (thermocol) cutlery – straws, trays, spoons, forks, knives, stirrers, etc. – and decorative items including flags. Huh. The ‘do not use’ list also includes all plastic and PVC banners less than 100 microns in thickness. It is also requested not to use wrapping and packing of films used with gifts and invitation cards.

The notification also includes a further list of items whose use is to be discouraged. Such items include plastic carry bags, folders and bottles of less than one liter capacity. As per the notification, higher educational institutions should discourage the use of any other plastic material for which an alternative is available.

The notification also requested the institutions to organize various programs to create awareness about single-use plastics and the recently notified Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, which ban the use of single-use plastics by 2022. try to do.

The notification also directed the universities and colleges to upload the action taken report regarding the programs being run under the campaign on the University Activity Monitoring Portal.
