UGC chief: Normalized score, not percentile/raw, to be the basis of merit list for admission – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The rank/merit list for undergraduate admission will be based on normalized marks and not on the basis of raw marks or percentage under CUET-UG.
After the announcement of the results by the National Testing Agency early Friday, M Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman, University Grants Commission Said that universities will prepare the rank list for UG admissions on the basis of “normalized” marks and not on the basis of percentage or “raw marks”.
scorecard issued by NTA It had two components – percentile score and normalized score.
Kumar said that the scores have been normalized to provide equal opportunities to the students appearing in the same subject on different days or in different shifts.
However this is troubling the candidates as some of the normalized scores are less than the percentile and vice versa.
UGC The Chairperson said that since the level of difficulty in the same subject varies from session to session, it is quite possible that in the scorecard one can see that the percentile in one subject is higher than the normal marks and in another subject. The percentile is below normal. generalized mark.

Kumar said, “How can we compare the performance of different students at the general level? We need to ensure that the admission is done on the basis of a score that accurately compares the performance of the students.”
The UGC chief said, “The CUET The score card contains both the percentile and general marks of the student in each subject. Percentile shows the relative performance of a student among the group of students who wrote the exam in a given shift in a subject. Using the Equipercentile method, students’ percentiles are converted into normalized scores taking into account the difficulty levels of multiple sessions. The level of difficulty varies from session to session in the same subject. So it is quite possible that in the score card you can see that the percentile in one subject is higher than the normal marks and in the other subject the percentile is less than the normalized marks. Students need not worry about these differences as the CUET normalization formula was decided by the panel of experts from Indian Statistical Institute, IIT Delhi and University of Delhi. Universities can use these normalized marks to prepare the rank list for admission. ,
Stating that the scores have been normalized to provide a level playing field for the students as they wrote the exam in the same subject on different days, Kumar said: “Unlike CUET-UG, other entrance exams limited to a small number of subjects. In single-session entrance examinations, a common statistically established method is used to convert the raw scores into a more uniform scale using the percentile method so that students’ performances can be compared to each other.
“But in entrance exams like CUET-UG, since the exam is conducted on different days and in multiple sessions for the same subject, it will lead to multiple percentages for each group of students,” he said.
Another problem with using only the percentile is that in subjects such as sports or fine arts, some weightage is given to the skills component by some universities, Kumar explained.
“But the raw marks in the skill component and the remaining weightage of the percentile cannot be used to prepare the rank list as it would be like adding oranges to apples.
