Academic Bank of Credit brought to you by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Ministry of Education (MoE) is a virtual storehouse that stores personal credit information of students throughout their learning journey.

All Central Universities across the country have registered their institutions on the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) portal and are also onboarding their students so that their credentials can be uploaded smoothly at par with the national one. Education Policy (NEP), 2020, University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said on Tuesday.

Kumar said this while chairing a virtual meeting of Vice Chancellors of 45 Central Universities to review the implementation of NEP. Students registration drive for ABC is going on in many universities. This is an important mandate under the New Education Policy, which allows students to keep track of their credits earned during higher education and helps in the flexibility of different entry and exit points along with the award of degree.

“Many of these universities have adopted guidelines for multiple admissions and exits at UG/PG level and are making provisions to implement the same. Also, Universities have made necessary changes in their Ordinances for PG, UG and UG-PG Integrated Programs by removing strict limits and allowing flexible entry and exit points to facilitate new opportunities for life-long learning enrolled for the Academic Credit Bank have been implemented. Portal, Kumar said.

He said that these universities are trying to have academic collaboration with foreign universities for twin, joint and dual degrees. Some universities are offering twinning programs with several foreign universities.

The NEP states that admission to undergraduate courses in central universities is done through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which has started taking place.

Besides, in line with the NEP, the curriculum of academic programs has been revised to include multidisciplinary aspects, skill components, value education and contemporary relevance, Kumar said.

While all the universities have presented their progress under NEP so far, it is noted that more certificate, diploma and UG/PG programs have been started in vocational education. Universities have designed skill enhancement courses which include soft and technical skills for all round development of the learners.

Kumar further said that keeping in view the areas and preferences of the students, internship programs with credits are being offered in various programmes. Research and innovation are being promoted by setting up R&D cells, incubation and innovation centers for advanced research in these universities.

He also said that the UGC is soon planning to launch the portal ‘Utsah- Undertaking Transformative Strategies and Action in Higher Education’ to collect information on qualitative reforms undertaken by higher educational institutions.
