UK cafes will charge customers extra if they behave rudely: report

Mr. Hussain got this inspirational idea from a Facebook post about an American cafe.

Expressing love and respect towards people is always appreciated. But a cafe in the United Kingdom has taken it a bit further. Chai Stop in Preston has introduced a new rule – it’s charging customers twice the amount of their bill if they don’t behave politely. According to a report in machester evening news, The move is aimed at encouraging consumers to be kind to the people serving their orders.

Usman Hussain, 29, launched the tea, donut, street food and dessert restaurant in March this year, the outlet said. They posted a notice stating that customers would be charged different fees for the same drink based on how respectfully they order.

A post was also shared on Chai Stop’s Facebook page on Saturday that read, “Desi Chai” will cost you £5 while “Desi Chai Please” will cost you £3. But “Hello, Desi Chai Please” will only cost you £1.90.”

Sharing the post, the cafe wrote, “Highly publicized chalkboard.”

According to Mr. Hussain, while the restaurant has never had a bad-behaved customer, he thinks the rules will encourage people to open up and support the cafe’s atmosphere “only for good vibes”. Manchester Evening News said in his report.

“I think it’s a good reminder to use your manners, because unfortunately sometimes we need to be reminded,” Mr Hussain was quoted as saying by the outlet.

“We’ve never struggled with rude customers, but people are definitely more open to coming and laughing with us since there’s a sign. For me, the most important thing in my business is walking through the door.” And to be treated like you’re a welcome guest in our house. It’s good to have that respect reciprocally,” he adds.

Mr. Hussein got this inspirational idea from a Facebook post about an American cafe that had established the same rules a few years ago. The picture was saved in his collection for two years and recently decided to test it in a tea stop.
