UK Covid alert level raised to second highest amid Omicron surge – Times of India

London: Britain raised its covid alert level on Sunday in response to the rapid spread of omicron version, as medical officials warned that hospitalizations were likely to increase sharply in the coming weeks. The Chief Medical Officers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland recommended raising the Alert Level from Level 3 to Level 4 on its 5-point scale, meaning they consider transmission of the virus to be high. “Early evidence suggests that omicron spreading much faster than delta and that vaccine safety Omicron is reduced against symptomatic disease,” he said.
Britain on Sunday announced additional steps to stop the spread of Omicron, including the expansion of booster jabs For people over 30. “Omicron is expected to be a major strain by mid-December,” Health Secretary Sajid Javid said. The government has set a target of giving booster jab to everyone 18 years of age and older by the end of January. People over 30 may get a third dose from next week.
